Medical Abbreviations
A brief guide to abbreviations that are used when discussing Protein S Deficiency:
- APA - Antiphospholipid Antibodies
- APC - Activated Protein C
- aPTT - Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time
- PTT - Partial Thromboplastin Time
- CVI - Chronic Venous Insufficiency
- Dx - Diagnosis
- DIC - Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation - complication of septic shock in which endotoxin induces systemic clotting of the blood
- DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis - blood clotting in the veins of the inner thigh or leg
- FVL - Factor V Leiden, the commonest hereditary condition that can cause thrombosis
- HAT - Hospital Acquired Thrombosis
- HRT - Hormone Replacement Therapy
- INR - International Normalized Ratio
- IV - Intravenous
- LMWH - Low Molecular Weight Heparin, e.g. Lovenox or Fragmin
- PCD - Protein C Deficiency
- PE - Pulmonary Embolism - blood clot in the pulmonary artery of the lung
- PSD - Protein S Deficiency
- PT - Prothrombin Time
- PTS - Post Thrombotic Syndrome
- SQ - Subcutaneous
- STP - Superficial Thrombophlebitis
- TIA - Transient Ischaemic Attack - a temporary paralysis, numbness, speech difficulty or other neurologic symptom that starts suddenly and recovers within 24 hours (typically resolves over several hours).
